How it works

Golf's most honest stat, on every shot.

OpenSG watches your round by GPS and turns it into Strokes Gained — the same measure the tours use to see, shot by shot, exactly where a player wins and loses. No sensors, no hardware, just the phone in your pocket. Here's how it all fits together.

Free while we're in beta. Practice stays free; real-round tracking moves to a subscription later.

The idea

What is Strokes Gained?

Every spot on a golf course has an expected number of strokes to hole out — a 150-yard approach from the fairway, a greenside bunker, a 20-foot putt each have a known average. Strokes Gained compares your shot to that average:

(expected strokes where the ball started) (expected strokes where it ended) 1

Beat the average and you gain a fraction of a stroke; come up short and you lose one. Add up every shot and OpenSG splits your round into the five places the game is won and lost — so a hot putter can never hide a cold approach.

You choose who to measure against: a golfer of your own handicap, scratch, or the PGA Tour average. The benchmark is the only thing that changes — the honesty doesn't.

From first tee to five numbers

Tracking a round is meant to disappear into the walk. Three steps, and most of it happens on its own.

Step 1

Play your round

Pick your course and tee off. GPS follows your ball down the hole — you just confirm at the green with a tap. Prefer control? Place shots manually, or fix everything after the hole on the map.

Step 2

Lean on the caddy

Over every shot you get a plays-like distance, a suggested club, your real shot spread on the hole, and the odds of where the ball ends up. Read the green before you putt.

Step 3

See where you stand

Finish and your round breaks into five Strokes-Gained numbers, feeding two live handicaps and a picture of your game that sharpens with every round.

In your pocket

A caddy that actually knows you

Every number you'd want over the ball — grounded in your own distances and your own misses, not a generic chart.

  • Plays-like distance & club — adjusted for slope, wind and altitude.
  • Expected strokes from any spot, and outcome odds — the chance of fairway, rough, water or OOB from your target.
  • Green reads with aim line and break, on satellite maps, with per-hole notes and “don't-hit” markers.
Over time

Watch your game come into focus

Rounds stack into trends you can act on — and two handicaps that tell the whole story.

  • Two handicaps — a traditional, GHIN-style index and an SG-native one built from every shot, so improvement shows up faster.
  • Category drill-downs — tap any of the five numbers to see why it happened and what to practice.
  • Your dispersion — the real standard deviation and shape of your misses per club, driving the suggestions and odds.

One round is all it takes to see it.

Off the course

Practice that counts — and stays free

From the driving range you can play a real course on the simulator, run scored par-3 and approach games, drill your putting and green reading, or work course management — many of them scored on Strokes Gained so you can measure practice, not just hit balls.

Practice keeps its own separate ledger: it never touches your handicap, your stats, or your benchmarks. And off-course practice stays free, always.

Fair when it counts, safe by design

Tournament mode

A one-tap, Rules-of-Golf-legal view that hides the assistance competition doesn't allow — club suggestions, plays-like, green reads, odds and practice tools — leaving only raw distances, your map and your notes. Coaches can lock an event to it.

Built for school golf

No advertising to minors, no one-to-one messaging, an age gate that blocks under-14 accounts, and optional guardian oversight for 14–17 players. Every coach connection is opt-in and revocable.

What it costs

Free for everyone while we're in beta. After that, off-course practice stays free forever; real-round tracking moves to an affordable subscription (monthly or annual for individuals, priced by size for teams). Students linked to a coach play free. Final prices are announced before beta ends — nothing you track today gets locked away.
